Discovery/Investigation

For writing a successful paper in college, the initial step demands a strong connection with your references. Merely reading an ultimate source is no more adequate. Formerly the writer thoroughly reads the ultimate source; it may be essential to procure secondary sources to support the thesis. Remember, it is not mandatory to read the whole book if your research yields books. You can either search for a chapter title that you assume will have knowledge relevant to your document or check the index for terms you will discuss. Your subordinate resource will be peer-reviewed periodicals that are accessible online.

Prewriting

Prewriting includes freewriting, brainstorming, outlining, or clustering. In prewriting, no idea is unnecessary or unusual. Though the common perception is that nothing hasn’t been written about before, if you allow yourself to anticipate unconventionally, you can find a way of looking at an old topic through new eyes.

During prewriting the writer also needs to decide the audience. “Who will read my report?”, “What is the objective of my report?” and “Why will they be reading my report”? Thinking about such questions will aid in setting your audience, and a simple response to these questions is “My professor” and “Because they assigned it.” It could be that your document needs to be prepared for elementary level pupils or candidates in a seminar or peers at a meeting. Different language and tone would be used for either of those audiences

Drafting

You start writing your paper with “drafting.” It is crucial to have a thesis idea to guide your writing in drafting. Your report will be prone to drift without a thesis, making it harder to frame after the fact. In the prewriting stage, the writers should use the created materials. Instead of beginning with an introduction, various writers will manage their body paragraphs first. This technique will allow them to work through ideas without feeling limited by a particular thesis but be prepared to eliminate sections that don’t fit. Afterward, create an opening paragraph (with an appropriate revised thesis) that reflects the body of your essay.

Revising

Revision has two distant scopes: global and local. Global revision fixes the issues of overall progression and cohesion of the report. Your report will have poor cohesion if the paragraphs do not relate to each other. Suppose your topics vary from paragraph to paragraph. In that case, it is significant to consider altering the order of your section and revising your report. A report is easier to read and understand that has smooth transitions. It is recommended to keep all similar ideas together and arrange your paragraphs to build your argument. Allow the early sections to serve as examples and information to develop your conclusions. However, your report’s blueprint is in the thesis, but your argument’s result should come at the end of the report.

Editing

The finalizing stage of report writing requires reviewing what you have written. You should look for any grammar, spelling, or punctuation errors that have been missed through the cracks during the revising stage. One of the best ways to find out your grammatical, punctuation, or spelling errors is by asking your friend to read it for you, or you read it out loud. Though this step seems minor within the writing process, it is an easy way to prevent the loss of points over simple mistakes.

Formatting, Inner-text citation, and Works Cited

The formatting of your report depends on the field of your topic. APA or CSE formatting is used for sciences, business, and economics. In contrast, MLA is used for English and other humanities and Chicago for history. These different formats will affect the appearance of inner-text citations, and Works cited page. Discuss your course or ask your professor to know what format you should use.
